SEMARAPURA, NusaBali.com – A tourist from the Czech Republic, identified as Martello Romano (49), was injured after being struck by a sudden large wave at Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida, on Friday afternoon, January 9, 2026.

Head of the Nusa Penida Police, Kompol I Ketut Kesuma Jaya, said the incident occurred at around 2:00 p.m. local time. The victim was standing near the shoreline and taking photos when a strong wave unexpectedly swept him off his feet, causing him to fall and sustain injuries.

“Although the weather appeared clear at the time, sea conditions at Kelingking Beach can change rapidly and waves can be unpredictable,” Kesuma Jaya said.

Lifeguards at Kelingking Beach, assisted by local residents, immediately provided initial assistance and moved the victim to a safer area on the beach. However, evacuating him proved difficult due to the steep cliff and narrow stairway leading up from the beach, with a height of approximately 170 meters.

The situation was then coordinated with the Nusa Penida Police and the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office (Basarnas). A joint SAR team consisting of police officers, SAR personnel, Balawista lifeguards, the Klungkung Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), medical staff from Griya Medika Clinic, and local residents arrived at the site at around 4:45 p.m.

The evacuation was led by Police Supervisor Aiptu I Putu Supradnya together with Nusa Penida SAR Unit Coordinator Cakra Negara, with strict attention to safety procedures for both the victim and rescue personnel. Despite challenging terrain and light rain, the team successfully evacuated the injured tourist from the beach to the top of the cliff at approximately 5:35 p.m.

Medical personnel confirmed that the victim suffered a hip dislocation. An ambulance that had been on standby at the location immediately transported him to Griya Medika Clinic for further treatment.

Police praised the swift coordination among all agencies involved and emphasized that safety remains a top priority in handling incidents at tourist destinations. Authorities also urged visitors to remain cautious when visiting coastal areas in Nusa Penida, particularly beaches known for strong and unpredictable waves such as Kelingking Beach.

Tourists are advised to follow safety warnings, heed lifeguard instructions, and keep a safe distance from the shoreline to prevent similar accidents. *gik
