MATARAM, NusaBali.com – A 46-year-old Switzerland tourist, identified as Benedikt Emmenegger, was successfully evacuated by helicopter on Wednesday (July 16) after suffering an accident while trekking Mount Rinjani, Lombok. The hiker reportedly slipped along the trail to Segara Anak Lake, a popular destination within the Mount Rinjani National Park.

The victim began his ascent via the Sembalun route on Tuesday, July 15, having registered through the official eRinjani application. The accident occurred around 25 minutes before reaching the Iron Bridge (Jembatan Besi), a known waypoint on the trail. The incident was reported at 11:25 WITA by the guide and porters accompanying him.

Initial assessments indicated the victim sustained a bone fracture and head bleeding, prompting authorities to consider an aerial evacuation due to the high risk of further medical complications.

Responding swiftly, a joint team composed of the Mount Rinjani National Park Agency (BTNGR), Edelweiss Medical Help Centre (EMHC), Rinjani Squad, and the Mataram SAR Office coordinated a helicopter rescue with operator Bali Air.

“Given the nature of the injuries, air evacuation was the best option,” said Gede Mustika, Head of BTNGR’s evacuation team.

At 5:00 PM local time, the victim was airlifted from the mountain and transported directly to a hospital in Bali for further medical treatment. Authorities confirmed the evacuation process went smoothly.

“The joint SAR team continues to monitor the victim’s condition and ensure he receives proper care,” said Saidar Rahmanjaya, Head of Operations and Alert Section at Mataram SAR Office.

The evacuation effort involved collaboration from multiple agencies, including TNI, Polri, BPBD, local SAR units, medical personnel, guides, and volunteers. The teams were equipped with mountaineering gear, emergency medical kits, and communication tools.

The successful operation highlights the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation in handling emergencies on Mount Rinjani, one of Indonesia’s most iconic trekking destinations.

BTNGR has pledged to provide continuous updates on the Swiss hiker’s recovery and encourages all climbers to prioritize safety and follow official procedures when accessing the mountain.
