MANGUPURA, NusaBali.com – I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali, will temporarily halt flight operations for 24 hours in observance of the sacred Hindu Day of Silence, Nyepi.

General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, announced on Thursday (March 27, 2025) that the suspension will begin on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 6:00 AM WITA and continue until Sunday, March 30, 2025, at 6:00 AM WITA.

"During this period, all domestic and international flight services will be temporarily suspended, except for medical evacuation flights and emergency landings," he stated.

To accommodate potential medical evacuations, emergency landings, or technical landings, airport authorities will deploy operational, security, and technical personnel who will remain on standby at the airport's operations control center.

Ahmad Syaugi emphasized that the airport closure is a gesture of respect for the Hindu community observing Nyepi, a day dedicated to self-reflection, silence, and fasting. The decision aligns with the Bali Governor's Circular Letter No. B.16.100.3.4/865/LLJ/DISHUB of 2025 regarding the observance of Nyepi, as well as a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) numbered A0131/25 NOTAMN issued to aviation stakeholders.

The NOTAM was published by AirNav Indonesia Denpasar Branch on January 14, 2025, ensuring that airlines had ample time to adjust their schedules accordingly. Under normal circumstances, the airport serves 54 airlines, operating 425 scheduled flights daily, including 207 domestic and 218 international flights.

To facilitate smooth departures after the closure, 19 aircraft will remain parked at the airport in preparation for immediate service post-Nyepi.

The airport closure also aligns with the Nyepi principle of "amati lelungan," which translates to refraining from travel and engaging in self-reflection. This period will also be utilized for service evaluations and operational maintenance.

"Additionally, we will take this opportunity to briefly rest the airport’s operational facilities, which have been running 24/7 throughout the year to maintain service standards," Ahmad Syaugi added.
